West Ham ‘need’ to sign proven Premier League players who are perfect for them like Dejan Lovren this summer, according to Alex Bruce.

The former Leeds and Hull centre-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Hammers need to stop taking risks and bring in experienced talent in the transfer market.

The Daily Mail report that the Irons are among a number of Premier League clubs keen to make on offer for Lovren this summer, with the 30-year-old said to be looking for a move to London.

Bruce believes a player of Lovren’s quality and experience is exactly the sort of player the Hammers need, suggesting they have taken too many risks over the years.

“That’s exactly the kind of player I’m talking about – steady-eddies who are going to go in and do a job,” Bruce told Football Insider.

“Dejan Lovren, say what you want about him, he’s a steady-eddy Premier League player and these are the players I think West Ham need to be linked with, rather than ones who are hit-and-miss.

“For example, foreigners who have not really played in the league before and it’s the toss of a coin whether they’re going to come and do well or not.

“He’s consistently decent, isn’t he, Lovren? He does well internationally and he’s done well for Liverpool when called upon. Arguably he might want to play a little bit more so it wouldn’t surprise me if he wants to get more regular football.”

Champions League winner Lovren has just 14 appearances under his belt for Liverpool this season, fighting the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for a place under Jurgen Klopp.

West Ham boss David Moyes has had Issa Diop, Fabian Balbuena and Angelo Ogbonna to call upon as his senior centre-backs this season.

In other West Ham news, Kevin Phillips has urged the club to right some wrongs after a shock transfer link.
