Phillips backs Aston Villa to complete Hennessey signing after source's 'talks' update

Kevin Phillips insists free agent Wayne Hennessey would be an excellent signing for Aston Villa.

The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the stopper can be a claiming influence on the squad.

During a Birmingham Mail Q and A on 9th July, reporter David Preece claimed Hennessey is “being monitored” by Villa.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 6th July that Hadjuk Split are in talks over a move for Lovre Kalinic.

Kalinic spent some of last season on loan in Croatia and will need to be replaced if he leaves.

Hennessey was released by Crystal Palace this summer after seven years at Selhurst Park.

Phillips claims Hennessey could be a great signing, as long as he is happy sit behind Emi Martinez in the pecking order.

“It’s almost a no brainer,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs

“He’s got experience, international and domestic. He’s an older head and a calming influence on the dressing room.

“As long as he’s happy to play second fiddle, he’s a great goalkeeper you can rely on if Martinez gets injured.

“It’s as simple as that, there’s not much more else you can say.

“It’s a safe, secure, signing you can rely on. A no brainer.”

Martinez helped Argentina win the Copa America on Saturday night as an Angel Di Maria goal downed Brazil in their own backyard.

He has been nothing short of a revelation since he joined Villa from Arsenal last summer.
