Phillips cannot believe update on Liverpool bid to sign Bamford
Kevin Phillips cannot believe Liverpool reportedly explored the idea of signing Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford in the summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner said “there was no way” the Reds would have even considered signing the 28-year-old two seasons ago.
Bamford committed his future to Leeds by putting pen to paper on a new five-year deal in August.
However, according to Goal‘s Neil Jones (September 9th), Liverpool explored the idea of signing the England international in the summer.
It is said that their interest was “genuine” with Jurgen Klopp and his recruitment team “fans” of Bamford.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the report, Phillips said: “Really?

“I am very surprised to hear Liverpool were interested in Bamford.
“As a club, they are a level above and I mean that as no disrespect to Bamford. Is he a Liverpool player? Will he take them to the next level? I don’t think so. You’d expect them to be going after a Harry Kane or an Erling Haaland.
“If it is true, it’s fantastic for the player. Two years ago there was no way he’d be targeted by Liverpool.
“You need to praise Bamford and Bielsa because the improvement has been massive. His game has been enhanced, big time.”
Bamford contributed an impressive 17 goals and eight assists in 38 Premier League fixtures last season.
He has one goal and two assists to his name so far this term.
