Phillips hails 'great news' from McGinn after Sky's Aston Villa latest

Kevin Phillips has claimed John McGinn’s recent comments will be “great to hear” for Dean Smith and Aston Villa fans alike.

The former Claret and Blue hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted it was “good to see” the 27-year-old midfielder bounce back from his injury woes.

Speaking to Sky Sports (October 21st), McGinn claimed he is currently in the best form of his career to date – adding that he is in a “good place” with Aston Villa.

The Scotland midfielder has netted twice and registered one assist in seven Premier League matches this season.

McGinn has also played a vital role for his country this term.

He netted as Scotland beat Israel 3-2 earlier this month to boost their World Cup qualification chances.

Phillips suggested the versatile midfielder is back to his best after suffering an ankle fracture in December 2019.

“That’s great news to hear from Dean Smith and the Villa fans’ point of view,” he told Football Insider.

“The progress has been slow for him since his injury, and it’s good to see him getting back to the form he was producing before.

“I like him, whether he plays in that number 10 role, in midfield or out wide – he gives you options.

“Getting the goal the other day will do his confidence the world of good.

“It’s great to hear that from the player himself – that can only be positive vibes for Smith and the club.”

McGinn has netted 15 goals in 118 games for Aston Villa.

The 40-cap Scotland international signed for the Midlands club from Hibernian in 2018.

An Aston Villa source has told Football Insider that manager Dean Smith will come under “huge pressure” if he doesn’t beat Arsenal tonight.
