Phillips in awe of Davis as Rangers footage emerges

Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Rangers midfielder Steven Davis and claimed he is ageing “like a fine bottle of wine”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland and England striker said the 36-year-old will remain one of the first names on the team sheet at Ibrox despite Steven Gerrard bolstering his midfield options this summer.

Davis has started both of Rangers fixtures this season and played the full ninety minutes of their 2-1 loss to Malmo on Tuesday night.

A 95th minute goal from the Northern Ireland international in that fixture gives the Gers a lifeline going into next week’s second leg.

Phillips is adamant Davis’ “huge goal” will help the Light Blues progress to the Champions League play-offs.

“I think that will turn out to be a huge goal because I’m backing them to turn it around at Ibrox.” he told Football Insider.

“They will have a full crowd and that will really help. Davis has given his club a huge lifeline.

“Steven Davis is like a fine bottle of wine. He just gets better and better with age.

“What a player he is. He is so clever. He plays with his brain and that is why he is able to play at such a high level into his thirties. What he does is read the game really well and that means his lack of pace is not a major issue.

“Rangers have got so many players in that middle area but he is not going to be one that makes way. Stevie G has got faith in Davis. He has never let him down.”
