Phillips issues 'big' Sunderland claim after Speakman reveal

Bailey Wright, Tom Flanagan and Lynden Gooch will not be offered new Sunderland deals before the end of the season.

That is the view of Stadium of Light legend Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the trio’s contract situation on Wearside.

Wright, 29, Flanagan, 29, and Gooch, 26, have all entered the final six months of their current agreements.

All three have been a major part of Lee Johnson’s side this season and have played over 20 league fixtures.

As quoted by the Chronicle (4 January), sporting director Kristjaan Speakman revealed the club are yet to make a decision on players’ futures.

He added that the January window and remaining games will have a decisive bearing on the club’s decisions.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the trio’s future, Phillips said: “Why aren’t negotiations already happening?

“I think it’s because new deals will be heavily reliant on whether they get promotion.

“There is only four months left of the season so reading between the lines, I think the club will want to wait until the summer before seeing what happens. At that point I think they’ll sit down and table offers.

“Players like Wright, Flanagan and Gooch have done well this season. They’ve been involved week in, week out but there is a big difference between the Championship and League One.

“The club will need to re-assess at the end of the season whether to move those players on or whether to give them another year.”
