Phillips: Liverpool to strike Mane agreement shortly as 'offer close to what he wants'

Liverpool will offer Sadio Mane “close to what he wants” in negotiations over a new contract, according to Kevin Phillips.

The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is adamant the two parties “will come to an agreement” over an extension.

Mane, said to be a “world class” superstar and “one of the best players in the Premier League”, has 18 months to run on his current deal at Anfield.

Fabrizio Romano told his Here We Go Podcast last Tuesday (23 November) that the Reds are preparing to make first contact with Mane and his representatives regarding a new contract.

Negotiations with Mohamed Salah, who is also out of contract in 2023, are proving complicated for club chiefs.

Phillips believes Mane’s contract will be far easier to sort than Salah’s.

“Mane will understand that Salah deserves more of a pay rise,” he told Football Insider.

“On his day, Mane is word-class. He is one of the best players in the Premier League.

“Salah is on a different class to everyone right now. He can command what he wants.

“I think they will come to an agreement with Mane. I don’t think it will be as difficult as Salah. The club’s offer will probably be close to what Mane wants.

“He is very happy where he is. Why wouldn’t he be? Liverpool are challenging for the Premier League and the Champions League.

“The club have to be a bit sensible. Like the [Jordan] Henderson situation, I think it will get resolved. Mane will get his contract signed.”
