Phillips: McGeady took 'huge' pay cut to re-sign for Sunderland
Kevin Phillips is over the moon to see Aiden McGeady sign a new contract with Sunderland.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend claimed McGeady, 35, is quite possibly still the best player in League One.
Sunderland confirmed on June 30th that the 92-times Republic of Ireland international had put pen to paper on a new one-year contract on Wearside.
McGeady’s Sunderland career looked all but over 12 months ago after he was frozen out of the first team by previous manager Phil Parkinson.
The appointment of Lee Johnson in December has seen the winger return to the side.
Phillips is adamant McGeady has taken a “huge” pay cut to remain at the Stadium of Light.

“I really hope he picks up where he left off last season,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“It is great news that he has signed.
“It shows his commitment to the project and the club because I’m sure he took a huge cut on his wages. I think it will be a heavily incentivised contract, with the main bonus coming if he helps them get promoted next season.
“It is great for Lee Johnson because in McGeady he has got one of the best players in the league, if not the best.
“You just hope he can replicate the levels of last season. I think he will. He likes it at Sunderland and he probably feels that he owes the fans one.”
