Kevin Phillips claims Rodrigo is lucky that no fans have been inside Elland Road this season as he would be getting stick from the Leeds United faithful.
Former Sunderland striker Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted that Rodrigo made all the right noises with comments he made on social media last week.
Rodrigo, 30, took to Instagram to address stories in the media regarding his future and hit back at rumours that he was at odds with Marcelo Bielsa.
But Phillips also suggested that the currently absent Elland Road crowd would be giving Rodrigo some stick after his somewhat disappointing performances this season.
When asked if Rodrigo will improve next season, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “I hope so, I’ve seen his quotes and he’s said all the right things, he’s said what he’s said and how he’s feeling.
“You’d like to think that what he’s said is true, you’d certainly hope he respects his manager.
“It’s been an indifferent season for him and he’s very lucky at the moment that there are no crowds in the stadiums because he might be getting a stick, you know what supporters are like.
“It’s up to the player now to start performing and putting good performances in but he’s one of the players on the burner who will get better and better next season.”
Rodrigo has only started 12 Premier League games for Leeds since his summer move from Valencia.
He has three league goals to his name with his last strike coming in December’s 5-0 away win against West Brom.
