Phillips shares verdict on Fonseca landing Celtic job after offer reported

Kevin Phillips has poured cold water on the prospect of Paul Fonseca being appointed the new Celtic manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker suggested Eddie Howe is the perfect man to take over at Parkhead given his attacking brand of football.

According to the Transfer Window Podcast, the Hoops have been offered the services of Fonseca, 48, following the announcement he will leave AS Roma at the end of the season.

Football Insider understands Celtic have tabled a “wonderful offer” to Howe after a verbal agreement was reached at the beginning of April.

The 43-year-old has been out of work since he parted ways with Bournemouth at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Fonseca is a better option for the Hoops than Howe, Phillips said “Quite frankly, that stinks of putting two and two together for me.

“He has left Roma and all of a sudden he is top of the list to take the Celtic job? I’m not sure.

“I cannot confess to know him or have watched his Roma side on a regular basis but in Eddie Howe, Celtic could have a manager who plays attractive football and is a good man-manager.

“Celtic fans want to be exciting going forward next season and Eddie showed during his time at Bournemouth that he can bring that.”

In other news, Celtic big earner is not expected to play for the club again as he prepares to join a new club this summer.
