Phillips swipes at ‘never satisfied’ Newcastle fans after senior man savaged

Kevin Phillips insists Steve Bruce should be given a fair crack of the whip at Newcastle United next season.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Bruce should be given at least six months of next season to prove himself.

The Magpies boss won the Premier League Manager of the Month accolade after a run of good results in April.

This run helped to secure Newcastle’s safety but many fans are still unhappy following the club’s dismal start to 2021.

Before April’s turnaround, Newcastle had a record of just two wins in 21 games in all competitions.

Phillips claims Bruce deserves a chance to prove himself next season but admitted he may not get it.

“That’s the nature of the beast,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“Newcastle fans are never satisfied. That’s not a dig at them but they always want something better.

“A bit like we do at Sunderland but sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.

“Stevie Bruce, I’ve backed him all the time. I always said he would turn it around and he’s done a fantastic job.

“Of course, I want to see him given two or three months at the start of next season but if Newcastle don’t start well he’ll be right up against it.

“He deserves the chance to start next season and he deserves all the accolades that come his way for what he’s had to deal with this season.

“The pressure, the injuries, I hope he gets a good six months next year.”
