Phillips ‘very surprised’ by Leeds after ‘crazy’ Aaronson bid update

Kevin Phillips is baffled by Leeds United’s pursuit of Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland and England striker said “it would be crazy” to sign an attacking midfielder before a striker or a holding midfielder.

The Whites saw their opening £15million bid for Aaronson rejected by Salzburg last week.

A Leeds source has since told Football Insider (21 January) that the club have upped their offer to £20million and are hopeful of agreeing a deal.

Phillips is adamant the money would be “better spent in other areas.”

“I would say that’s crazy,” he told Football Insider.

“Another attacking midfielder? When they haven’t got a second senior striker it makes no sense to me.

“I don’t think an attacking midfielder should be the priority right now. I think a striker and then a holding midfielder is what is needed. Most people would agree that’s a better option.

“Unless Aaronson can play in a false nine role, the money would be better spent in other areas.

“It stood out in the game against Newcastle that Leeds need another striker. That game highlighted it. I would be very surprised if that move goes through.”

Leeds have struggled in the absence of Patrick Bamford, who has been sidelined through injury for the majority of this season.
