Phillips wowed by reported Leeds interest in signing 'amazing' Cunha

Kevin Phillips claims the signing of Matheus Cunha ‘sounds amazing’ following reported interest from Leeds United.

The former Sunderland hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Cunha’s stats for club and country are seriously impressive.

SportBILD (via Sports Witness) claim Leeds wanted to sign the Herta Berlin attacker in January and that he is keen to move on this summer.

Cunha, 21, has scored seven goals and picked up six assists in 27 Bundesliga outings this season.

He also has an impressive record for Brazil’s Under 23 side, scoring 16 goals in 18 matches from 2019.

The forward joined Hertha in January 2020 after a spell with RB Leipzig.

When Phillips was told about Cunha’s stats for club and country, he was impressed and claimed he could be a decent signing for the Whites.

“He sounds amazing,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“He plays in German football which is as close as you can get to the Premier League. It’s intense with the pace the physicality of the league.

“Those stats sound impressive. You need to do your homework and I’m sure they will send people to watch him.

“If he leaves then I have no issues with saying he can be a decent signing. We have seen it before though, players with a high reputation coming in and struggling.

“It’s encouraging that Leeds are branching out and looking everywhere.”

Hertha Berlin sporting director Michael Preetz has been very complimentary of Cunha and his potential.

He is quoted as saying, “Matheus is a young player with enormous potential, who has already shown his impressive skills” [Bundesliga]
