Manchester United are concerned they could be set to miss out on the signing of Eric Dier from Tottenham this summer, according to a report.

The Evening Standard report that the Premier League giants fear that Tottenham will refuse to do business with the club over a potential deal for Dier, and could be set to reject any and all offers for Dier this summer.

Old Trafford chief Jose Mourinho is understood to be keen on bringing the 23-year-old Tottenham ace to the club this summer, in a bid to bring order to his midfield unit.

However, following a statement made by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy last week, in which the long-standing chief revealed he would stand firm on player sales, United are believed to be worried they miss out on their man.

The statement read, as quoted by the Standard: “All players were under contracts, contracts they were happy to sign at the time. They would be expected to honour those contracts.”

Dier acquired a new long-term deal worth £70,000-per-week only eight months ago, which sees him under contract at the club until the summer of 2021.

However, the England international has played only intermittently in his preferred midfield role at Tottenham this season, following the arrival of Victor Wanyama last summer.

He has instead been forced to play as part of a three-man back line, although he has still played an important role for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The Mirror had earlier reported that Manchester United were willing to test Tottenham and Levy’s resolve with a £40million offer for Dier when the transfer window re-opens this summer.

However, the latest report from the Standard suggests that United may be forced to conjure up a plan B option in case their attempts to sign Dier fall short.

Levy has made it clear that he will not give in to the demands of any of Tottenham’s players so soon after being handed lucrative extensions to their current contracts. However, while that could prove successful in staving off interest from the likes of Manchester United and their other Premier League rivals, it could have negative repercussions. Tottenham will be keen to ensure squad harmony does not take a hit from Levy’s firm stance, with several players likely to have their heads turned this summer by potential moves away from the club. Dier could be tempted to switch to United if they can offer him a regular midfield role, but Pochettino still values him as a key player, and staying put wouldn’t do much harm.
