Crystal Palace are plotting a late summer bid to sign West Ham centre-back Jose Fonte, according to a report.
The Mirror claims that Eagles manager Frank De Boer is eyeing up a move for Fonte, 33, with a view to saving his job at Selhurst Park with his side losing all three of their opening Premier League fixtures without even scoring a goal.
Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones claimed on his personal Twitter account on Monday morning that Palace are lining up a bid worth £8million to re-sign the Portuguese defender, who left the south London side to join Southampton in 2010.
After seven years with the Saints, West Ham snapped up Fonte for £8million in January, but his performances have since been lacking and he has only started one of their first four games across all competitions this term.
The Hammers’ senior player, who lifted the European Championships title with Portugal last summer, made 16 appearances across all competitions for the east London club last season as they slumped to a bottom half finish in the English top-flight.
Football Insider Verdict
If De Boer wants to save his job, he shouldn’t be looking at signing a defender from a team where their manager is also fighting for his career. Slaven Bilic is under just as much pressure as the Dutch manager and the Croat has only named Fonte to play in one fixture so far this season. The Irons should happily left Fonte leave if the Eagles offer £8million. With that money they could replace him well and get someone in that can stop the current rut of form they’re in. It’s going to be an interesting few days at the London Stadium, with it looking like players might be leaving as well as coming in.
In other West Ham news, this player who has recently signed for the Hammers has blasted Bilic for a crucial tactical blunder.
