Pochettino: Bruno Fernandes and three other Man United superstars may be sold by new manager – pundit

Danny Mills has suggested Man United should sell Bruno Fernandes in the summer to help fund a rebuild under the new manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and Leeds United full-back suggested Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo could all leave Old Trafford too.

A club source told Football Insider they are telling managerial candidates they will have to operate on a sustainable basis in the summer transfer window.

Man United

Sky Sports reported on Tuesday (22 March) United have a four-man shortlist for the role including Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag, Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique.

“If you bring in Ten Hag or Pochettino then I think you would need to have a clearout and give that manager the opportunity to bring through the younger players that he wants,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“That might mean getting rid of Cavani, Ronaldo, Pogba and a few others. That would reduce your wage bill massively and mean there are funds available.

“Maybe you could even sell Bruno Fernandes for a lot of money.

“The way Pocehttino and Ten Hag work is on a younger model. They want a plan, develop players by bringing them through. That’s how they work and get their respect.

“To parachute them in to deal with what you’ve got now, it’s been proven it’s not necessarily the managers that are the issue at Man United, it’s the players.

Chelsea

“It’s a rebuild for the bottom up. They tried to buy top names, it didn’t work so don’t go that route again.

“If you’re going to rebuild and given Pochettino or Ten Hag a three or four-year deal start from scratch. Allow them to do what they are good at rather than ask them to do something they can’t.”
