Pochettino delivers verdict on Tottenham season after final home game
By Matt Farr
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino insists he has ‘no regrets’ this season, despite missing out on the Premier League title.
Pochettino saw his side seal a second-placed finish in the league this term with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at White Hart Lane on Sunday, their final ever match at the north London ground.
The club are set to replace White Hart Lane with a brand new 61,000 seat stadium complex, but will play their home games at Wembley as construction is completed next season.
Following the victory, the Argentine revealed he was ‘very lucky’ to be a part of such a special moment in the club’s history, but also vowed to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
He said, as quoted by the Standard: “It was a very emotional game and a very emotional ceremony. It’s difficult to describe [my emotions].
“I’m a very lucky guy because to share the history of such a club in such a special moment. I want to congratulate all and say thank you to all the players, fans and staff. All together we have worked so hard together.
“I’m really disappointed because Chelsea, in the end, won the Premier League. But [I have] nothing to regret and we will try next season to try to win the league.”
Pochettino’s tenure at the club began three years ago, during which time the 45-year-old chief has transformed the club into a genuine title threat.
Tottenham ran a close battle alongside Leicester for the league title last season, only to fall short in the final weeks and end up with a third-placed finish, but they still secured Champions League football.
However, the win over Manchester United on Sunday ensured Tottenham were guaranteed to finish above rivals Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal, whilst qualifying for Europe once again.
The next step, however, is for Pochettino’s side to go the extra mile and bring silverware to the club; but the chances of achieving such a feat at White Hart Lane are now long gone.
Instead, the club must hope that their temporary switch to Wembley Stadium can bring them the success they crave, before embarking upon a new era back on their current site.
Tottenham have two games still to play in the Premier League, against Leicester and relegated Hull.
