Pochettino hints at why Tottenham have failed to make a signing this summer
By Danny Wright
Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that he is still taking a calm approach to the transfer market despite Tottenham being the only team in the Premier League that are yet to announce the arrival of a new player.
The likes of Everton, Manchester United and Arsenal have made considerable additions to their squad ahead of next season, leaving many Spurs supporters worried that their club could be falling behind their rivals.
It’s not like the money isn’t there either with Nabil Bentaleb, Fedrico Fazio and Clinton N’Jie being sold by the Premier League runners-up, as well as Kyle Walker who has joined Manchester City for a fee widely reported to be worth £50million.
However Pochettino has hinted that the quiet approach to this transfer window is down to the trust he has in his current squad and the youth options that he has available to him should his side suffer an injury crisis.
“The last two seasons, it is true, we improved a lot. It is very clear, our philosophy is about trying to play exciting football with young players and trying to be different to the top sides. I think next season is a big, big challenge for us,” said Pochettino to ESPN.
“For one, it’s because we moved to Wembley, a different environment for us, a different pitch and stadium, all will be different for us. It is true that we must change because we were very comfortable playing at White Hart Lane.
“And then, I think because the big sides are investing a lot of money in trying to improve their squads, but for us we are so calm and so quiet because we have belief in our youth from our academy. We may lack a few players, but we are so calm because I think we have a very good team and the most important thing for us always is the team.”
Tottenham are hailed for the strength of their starting 11, but are often called out for their lack of strength in depth, especially in attack where Vincent Janssen is mean to be the back-up to Harry Kane.
However the Dutchman failed to find the net as much as Pochettino and the Spurs fans would have hoped in Kane’s two injury spells last term and most of the goals came from Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli from midfield positions.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs could be set to make their first summer signing, but are in a race with Arsenal to land this contract-rebel from one of their title rivals.
