Pochettino: Rarely-seen Tottenham player could start in FA Cup semi-final v Man United
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that second choice goalkeeper Michel Vorm could possibly start between the sticks in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester United at Wembley.
Vorm, 34, has played every minute of Spurs’ FA Cup run this season but many would expect Hugo Lloris to retain his No 1 role for such a big game this weekend.
Teams in the past, namely Arsenal, have stuck by the principle of allowing the No 2 goalkeeper to play in the cups, even in the biggest of games, leading to disastrous results.
On Thursday, Pochettino revealed that there’s a chance that the rarely-seen Vorm could be in his starting line-up against Man United.
“You know I never confirm the team before confirming it to the players. It’s one possibility of course,” he said when asked about starting the Dutch shot-stopper, as quoted by ESPN reporter Ben Pearce on his personal Twitter account.

Vorm has made just 10 appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season. He has kept clean sheets in five of those games with his most recent being against Swansea in the quarter-finals last month.

Pochettino really cannot risk anything against Man United this weekend and there’s no way that Vorm should be starting. Lloris has made his mistakes this season, but Vorm has to and has made some errors on Spurs’ way to the semi-finals. If something goes wrong against United with Lloris in goals, no one will be saying Pochettino should’ve started Vorm, but if the Dutchman gets the nod, everything will be on the manager’s back for not starting the club captain. We’ve seen before how it can go wrong when Arsene Wenger has toyed with his goalkeeper selection.
