Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has been left raving over the performance of Eric Dier after his starring role in the heart of defence against Crystal Palace.
Spurs left it late against the Eagles at Selhurst Park, Harry Kane netting his 35th goal of the season in the 88th minute to secure the three points and help strengthen their grip on a top four spot come the end of the season.
However the Lilywhites had to make do without arguably their two first choice centre backs, with both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen missing from the starting XI, with versatile powerhouse Eric Dier slotting into the back four after having been utilised as a central midfielder for much of the season.
Lining up alongside Davinson Sanchez, he excelled at the back after his surprise call up, helping his side keep a clean sheet which was pivotal to the three points returning to north London.
Speaking of the 24-year-old, Pochettino was full of praise, insisting that his ability to operate in a variety of positions makes him a valuable member of the squad.
He told football.london: “Today I think he was fantastic.
“He and Davinson were fantastic. Many good communications. It was a tough game, up against Benteke, different players like Townsend, and we kept a clean sheet.
“He can play like a midfielder, like a centre-back. Remember in my first season he played like a full-back too. It makes him very strong and an important player for Tottenham.”
This season has seen Dier make 36 appearances across all competitions, which has included turning out in every one of the club’s league games, and has managed to chip in with two assists.
