Pochettino sack: Big update on Chelsea manager’s future after Wolves defeat – sources

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is not under imminent sack pressure despite the 4-2 loss against Wolves on Sunday (4 February), sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues suffered the heavy defeat at Stamford Bridge and now sit 11th in the Premier League table with 15 games remaining of the 2023-24 campaign.

Pochettino, who has admitted that his job is no longer safe, has won 15 of a possible 31 games in charge of Chelsea since taking the job last summer (2023).

The loss against Wolves came just days after a 4-1 defeat against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield.

Recent results and the Blues’ league position will bring pressure – but the ownership at Stamford Bridge has already appointed three managers since taking control of the club.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the US-based owners don’t want to dispense with Pochettino already after learning lessons from a tumultuous 2022-23 campaign.

The shining light in a dismal season so far for Pochettino is a League Cup final against Liverpool later this month, which will give him the chance to win his first silverware in England.

Chelsea’s poor form this season comes after huge spending in the transfer market.

The Blues spent a reported £400million on new players last summer – with the likes of Moises Caicedo and Christopher Nkunku arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Injuries have hit Pochettino’s plans hard, with Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Ben Chillwell and Reece James among those to spend a long spell on the treatment table this term.

The Blues are next in action against Aston Villa in a FA Cup fourth-round replay on Wednesday (7 February).
