Pontus Jansson sends Twitter message to Leeds fans after shock omission

By Will Butcher

Pontus Jansson has praised the togetherness of the Leeds team on Twitter after their crucial Championship victory against Brighton on Saturday.

The division’s top scorer, Chris Wood, took his league tally to 24 goals with a brace against Chris Hughton’s second placed side on Saturday, as Leeds secured a 2-0 win at Elland Road.

Central defensive mainstay Jansson was a surprise omission from Garry Monk’s starting eleven to face the Seagulls despite being fit and available, as manager Garry Monk opted to bring Liam Cooper in from the cold to partner Kyle Bartley.

The Sweden international did not mention his omission as he declared he was “really proud” to watch Leeds win on his personal Twitter account.

New Zealand international Wood took his overall tally for the season to 27, as he gave the Yorkshire giants the lead just after the hour mark to the relief of the home support.

Leeds’ number nine rose highest in the Brighton penalty area to head home a floated Charlie Taylor cross, which looped into the back of the net beyond the reach of David Stockdale.

Substitute Souleymane Doukara’s mazy run into the penalty area saw him win a spot kick for the Yorkshire giants, after being felled by Fikayo Tomori inside the box.

Wood stepped up, slamming the ball home straight down the middle late on to make all three points safe as Leeds close the gap on third-placed Huddersfield to just two points.

Monk’s men next go up against Reading at the Madjeski Stadium on April 1, as the international break takes priority over the next fortnight.

Jansson is set to join the Sweden squad once again, as they face Belarus in a 2018 World Cup qualifier before travelling to Maritimo’s Stadium to play against Portugal on March 28.

In other Leeds news, fans have reacted on Twitter to the news that this 25-year-old ace has been handed a late call-up by his national side.
