Postecoglou ‘screaming for’ Tottenham sack and pay off to ‘never need to work again’

Ange Postecoglou is “screaming” to be sacked by Tottenham due to the pay out fee he will receive, Tam McManus believes.

Growing pressure on the 56-year-old almost reached breaking point on Thursday evening (3 April), as Tottenham lost for the third time in their last five Premier League fixtures, away at Chelsea.

Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez combined for the only goal of the game, with the former’s pinpoint cross finding the unmarked run of the Argentine, for a simple headed finish.

The result means Spurs have lost 16 of their 30 Premier League games this term, a run which could see few complaints from any manager if they were to be sacked.

After Postecoglou’s subsequent press conference comments, Scottish pundit McManus has suggested that the Australian is almost asking to be sacked at Tottenham, as the payment he would likely receive will mean he no longer needs to take another managers job in football.

Postecoglou struggling to connect with the Tottenham fans

In a post on X Friday (4th April), McManus claimed that Postecoglou could not turn down his contract at Tottenham due to the financial benefits of leaving Celtic two years ago, despite him knowing he “joined the wrong club”.

The Australian’s current contract in north London runs until 2027, having signed a four-year deal in June 2023 [The Guardian].

This means, In the event that Postecoglou no longer being in charge of Tottenham at the start of next season, he would be paid out on the last two-years of his deal.

The former Celtic boss won five major trophies during his time at the club from 2021-2023, including two Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish League Cup’s and one Scottish Cup.

This formed a special bond with the fans that McManus believes Postecoglou will be unable to replicate anywhere else in his career.

Postecoglou to be given until the end of the season

Football Insider verdict

The situation could not be much worse than it currently is for Postecoglou at Spurs but with no firm movement being made over his future, it appears he will be afforded the rest of the season.

Spurs’ success this campaign all hinges on winning the Europa League, but their quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt poses a difficult match up, with the German side sitting third in the Bundesliga.

Even if Tottenham are to win the competition, many believe would be too little too late for Postecoglou as his relationship with the fans took an awful turn in their defeat to Chelsea.

There has been speculation in recent weeks around Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola taking over at Spurs, who despite a poor run of late, has excelled on the South Coast.

The Spaniard made his name as a coach at Rayo Vallecano where his possession based and attack minded style caught the eye of top clubs around the world.

However, the evidence for Spurs this season suggests that with Iraola‘s philosophy being similar to that of Postecoglou, whether bringing in the 42-year-old would be the right decision.
