BBC pundit slams Celtic player for Scotland display v England
By Danny Wright
Former Aberdeen goalkeeper David Preece has slammed Celtic player Craig Gordon for his performance in the 2-2 draw England on Saturday.
The experienced Scotland stopper conceded twice as the Three Lions rescued a late point courtesy of Harry Kane in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park, which has led Preece, 40, to think that Gordon is showing signs of “insecurity” in his displays.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring for England by directing a shot straight at the Hoops No 1, something which should not have happened according to Preece.
“I think you could have expected a much more confident and assured performance from Craig. He’s gone through a season unbeaten with Celtic but there’s been times this season, particularly when balls have been put over the top, where he’s been caught out,” said the BBC pundit in a video on BBC 5 Live Sport’s official Twitter account on Monday.
“I think there’s a bit of insecurity there at the minute.
“For both goals you could say, if you’re judging people by their top standards, he has to stop the first goal, the ball goes through him.”
Gordon has been Brendan Rodgers’ No 1 choice between the sticks for almost the entirety of the 2016/17 campaign, which saw the Hoops avoid defeat while winning the domestic treble.
The 34-year-old made 55 appearances across all competitions for the Bhoys, conceding 38 goals and keeping 28 clean sheets.
Gordon was called into the Scotland starting line-up on Saturday for the second time in a row for the first time in over two years.
He picked up his 47th senior international cap in the Auld Enemy clash, which left Scotland’s chances of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup hanging in the balance.
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton also seems to agree with Preece about Gordon’s performance for the Tartan Army and has even suggested that Rodgers buys a new goalkeeper over the summer transfer window.
