Premier League face backlash after Man United points deduction news – sources

Premier League officials could face a backlash from Everton and Nottingham Forest if they have permitted Manchester United to add certain allowances back, sources have told Football Insider.

Finance expert Stefan Borson has revealed United were given an “exceptional” £40million Covid allowance in 2021/2022, while other top-flight clubs are believed to have claimed around £1million.

Sources have told Football Insider it’s “surprising” the Manchester giants were permitted such a high Covid allowance despite playing the entire season in front of fans.

United also reported a £71.4million net loss for the first three months of 2024 – a significant rise on the £5.6million loss they made during the same period last year.

The Premier League club spent £30.3million in exceptional costs related to Sir Jim Ratcliffe buying his 27.7-per-cent stake at Old Trafford in February this year.

Football Insider revealed on 11 July Erik ten Hag’s side would have failed PSR last season if they weren’t permitted to add back those exceptional costs.

Man United controversy could lead to boardroom fury

Any potential breach of the PSR rules is now expected to see Premier League clubs hit with a points deduction after Everton and Forest were both docked points last season.

The Premier League’s PSR rules state top-flight clubs can lose a maximum of £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Sources have told Football Insider the United situation is likely to cause controversy in the boardrooms at Everton and Forest, while clubs like Aston Villa and Newcastle United – who have sold players to remain within the PSR limit – could also show their displeasure.

Forest fans have already made their feelings known about the Manchester giants’ Covid allowance, with one supporter suggesting the Premier League is “corrupt”.

But finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed he doesn’t believe there has been any corruption from the governing body after learning the reasons for United’s allowance from senior club sources.

They have put the £40million claim down to the cancellation of their 2021 summer tour, bad debts caused by commercial partner insolvency, being unable to fulfil sponsorship partner obligations in the summer of 2021, and broadcaster rebates from the Premier League and UEFA.
