Sources: Preston North End agree to sign Peterborough star David Cornell

Preston North End have agreed to sign Peterborough United goalkeeper David Cornell, Football Insider understands.

The Championship club have moved for the 31-year-old despite signing Freddie Woodman from Newcastle United last week.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Cornell has agreed terms on a contract with Preston and the deal should be completed soon.

The transfer will be a free after he left relegated Peterborough upon the expiration of his contract.

He is set to provide cover and competition for Newcastle number one Woodman.

Preston announced the capture last week fo Woodman, 25, from Newcastle after he signed a three-year deal.

That move was first revealed by Football Insider on 10 June after the Premier League club gave the keeper the green light to leave permanently.

He had spent the second half of last season at Bournemouth after previous spells at Swansea City, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Crawley Town and Hartlepool United.

Cornell is even more experienced than Woodman.

The 31-year-old, also known as Dai, was not first choice initially under then Posh boss Darren Ferguson last season and did not play against North End at Deepdale.

Instead that was Christy Pym who, after a fall-out with Ferguson, was replaced by Cornell.

The imminent Preston arrival went on to make 32 appearances for Peterborough as they were relegated from the Championship.

He also did not play in the reverse fixture against the Lilywhites at the Weston Homes Stadium.
