Price slashed: Liverpool installed odds-on favourites to sign forward loved by Klopp

By Alex Stevens

Liverpool have been installed odds-on favourites to sign Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

Sky Bet price the Merseyside giants at 8/11 to land the versatile England international following a dramatic slash of odds.

Liverpool were favourites to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain last month but the price at that point was a relatively distant 5/1.

The odds have tumbled for Liverpool and, in a clear sign they are hot favourites to sign the player, the next-best in the betting is West Ham, who are 12/1, ahead of Manchester United and Manchester City, both 14/1.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future has come under the microscope as he is out of contract at Arsenal in the summer of 2018 and talks have yet to begin on an extension.

The change in price comes after the Telegraph claimed that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is stepping up his pursuit of the 23-year-old.

The report details that Arsenal are holding out for a £35million valuation for the versatile attacker, but the Merseyside club are confident of driving the price down.

Klopp is known to be a keen admirer of the Arsenal star and feels he could add to his solid English core of Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Jordan Henderson and James Milner.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has spent the majority of his career to date in a wide forward role on the right flank.

He has been used in a number of roles this season by Arsene Wenger, including in a central midfield position and even at wing-back.

But Oxlade-Chamberlain has not been able to nail down a regular starting place despite making 40 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying eight assists.

Football Insider verdict:

Oxlade-Chamberlain was once tipped to be England’s next star player, but his career has stagnated at Arsenal just when it appeared he was ready to make the step to first-team regular. The Southampton academy product needs a move away from the Emirates Stadium to reignite his game and develop under a different coach. He has the technical ability, intelligence and mobility to be a bona fide Premier League star. Liverpool should pull out all the stops to make it happen.
