Pundit backs ‘massive’ Bruno Guimaraes deal after Newcastle source’s £60m reveal
Noel Whelan has insisted Newcastle United “cult hero” Bruno Guimaraes deserves “looking after” with an improved contract.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 24-year-old has been “massive” for Eddie Howe’s side since joining in January.
Football Insider revealed on 15 October that Newcastle United are preparing a club-record contract offer for Guimaraes.
His £120,000-a-week deal runs until 2026, but the Magpies are looking to elevate his wage to £200,000-a-week and extend his St James’ Park stay a further two years.
Brazil international Guimaraes was the subject of reported interest from Real Madrid during the summer window.
The midfielder, who cost around £40million earlier this year, has notched seven goals and two assists in 25 appearances for Newcastle.
When asked if Guimaraes is worth breaking the bank for, despite Newcastle trying to scale back spending, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely.
“He’s been a massive plus for them since he came in. He sat on the bench and watched for a couple of games, but there’s no doubt that he took his opportunity.
“He’s a cult hero now at Newcastle United. When you’ve got players like that who are committed to the cause, scoring, assisting, putting in performances – you’ve got to look after them.
“You do that by giving them improved contracts for their contribution.”

Newcastle sit sixth in the Premier League after 10 games – and have conceded the fewest goals of any top-flight side.
Guimaraes has started seven of a possible 10 league games this term after suffering a hamstring injury in August.
