Pundit backs Roberts to quit Leeds for Newcastle after Shearer reveal

Tyler Roberts would be tempted by a move to Newcastle United this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the promise of regular first team football coupled with the club’s passionate fan base could sway the 22-year-old into signing.

Roberts will enter the final 12 months of his contract at Elland Road in just over a month.

Football Insider understands Leeds have tabled the versatile forward a long-term offer but he is yet to accept throwing his future into doubt.

The Magpies are one of a number of club keeping tabs on the Wales international’s situation ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

In his Premier League team of the week earlier this season, Toon legend Alan Shearer heaped praise on Roberts for his performance against Chelsea.

When asked by Football Insider if he could see Roberts moving to St. James’ Park this summer, Campbell said: “I am not surprised to hear Newcastle are interested.

“Other teams will be looking at him because when he has played he has looked the part. Yes, he has not scored the goals he would’ve liked but he has still performed.

“When you have just 12 months left on your contract teams will be sniffing. They will take a punt because it is low risk.

“Newcastle need quality players. It is a great place to go and play your football. The fans have loads of passion up there. I’m sure he’d be tempted because he would also likely get more game time at Newcastle.”
