Pundit calls for ‘big’ Premier League action after Man United talks today

Paul Robinson has called for the Premier League to introduce “a rule” for the minimum players required to stage a match after a Covid-19 outbreak at Man United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League goalkeeper said outbreaks are going to be “a big problem going forward”.

Tottenham’s trip to Brighton was postponed after several Spurs players tested positive last week.

In a statement today, Manchester United confirmed they have closed their Carrington training base after positive cases among first-team players and staff.

The Red Devils are scheduled to travel to Brentford tomorrow.

However, Kevin Palmer this afternoon revealed the club are in talks with the Premier League about postponing the game.

When asked for his assessment of the latest, Robinson told Football Insider: “This is going to be a big problem.

“Regardless of who it is, there needs to be a rule.

“By all accounts Covid is going to get worse over the next few months and football will not be exempt. The Premier League need to bring in a rule.

“There needs to be a rule as to how many players have to contract it before the games called off. If you cannot field an XI and a full bench you have a reason to have a game called off.

“We have seen teams have lots of injuries in the past and cannot name a full bench. Thats not just because of Covid.

“A universal rule is the only way you can go forward otherwise teams will want games called off. What will happen when players go the the African Cup of Nations as well? There has to be a ruling.

“The minimum amount of fit players for a game to be held needs to be quantified. It’s a very grey area at the moment. It needs to be addressed.”
