Pundit claims Newcastle can make Varane-like signing after Luke Edwards update today

Frank McAvennie insists Newcastle have the money to sign a top player like Raphael Varane.

The former West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Mike Ashley just won’t give this money to Steve Bruce.

On Monday (23 August) The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards claimed the club are unlikely to make any more signings this summer.

The Toon have only signed Joe Willock from Arsenal this summer, meaning they have the same squad that finished last season.

Newcastle’s defence has been heavily criticised this season, conceding four against West Ham and two against Aston Villa.

McAvennie insists the Magpies have the money to shell out £20million on a new centre back, similarly to Man United’s capture of Varane.

“Newcastle have to stop leaking goals,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You can’t tell me Newcastle don’t have the money to make a top signing.

“Look at Varane at Man United, he cost nothing for a player of his quality.

“Obviously Newcastle can’t get him but the money has to be there, Ashley just won’t hand it out.

“£20million or so for a quality defender, that has to be possible for Newcastle, it’s a huge club.

“It’s being run like a circus. They are talking about loans or free transfers, this is a Premier League club.

“I just don’t get it.”

Varane signed for Manchester United earlier this summer after a long and successful spell with Real Madrid.

Newcastle and Manchester United face each other next month at Old Trafford.
