Pundit ‘excited’ by Newcastle move for ‘unbelievable’ Lingard after £15m update

Kevin Phillips has insisted Manchester United star Jesse Lingard could be persuaded to sign for the “project” at Newcastle United.

The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the “unbelievable” 28-year-old could be offered a deal “he can’t turn down” by the Tyneside club.

As reported by the Mirror on Sunday (October 10th), Lingard is one of four Man United stars coveted by Newcastle ahead of a January swoop.

Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Eric Bailly are also reportedly wanted by the Magpies.

As per the Sun (October 12th), the Old Trafford club have slashed their asking price for the contract rebel to just £15million – placing other suitors West Ham and Leicester on high alert.

Lingard enjoyed a revival with the Hammers last season – scoring nine in 16 during a loan spell in the second half of the season.

Phillips insisted Newcastle fans should be “very excited” about the prospect of his arrival.

“They have to get the balance right between the more promising youngsters and experienced, successful, older players,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Experience is something Jesse Lingard has in abundance; he’s seen it all with Man United.

“What he did at West Ham last year was unbelievable – so there’s no surprise that he’s linked with Newcastle.

“There is the question mark about whether he would want to leave United, but it might be that the Newcastle offer is just one that he can’t turn down.

“He might see something there in the project, the prospect of being there as Newcastle grow.

“If they could lure him through the door, I’d be very excited as a Newcastle fan.”
