Lucas Torreira would not be interested in a return to Arsenal even if his loan deal at Atletico Madrid is terminated, according to Kevin Campbell.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Highbury favourite suggested the 24-year-old could be the perfect partner for Thomas Partey if he is interested in resurrecting his career at the Emirates.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Mikel Arteta was coy on the Uruguay international’s future amid reports that his loan deal at the Wanda Metropolitano is set to be cut short.
The midfielder’s agent has since responded, insisting that his client is focused on the the season ahead with Atletico despite starting just two games in all competitions.
Torreira impressed when he first moved to the Emirates in 2018 with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville ‘massively impressed’ by the midfielder’s ‘huge impact’ on the club.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the centre-midfielder’s situation, Campbell said: “There is a conversation to be had between player and club.
“The Premier League did not suit Lucas Torreira as much as he would have thought.
“It looks like he wanted to go back to Italy or a Spanish speaking country which is fine but he is still an Arsenal player.
“It would be interesting to see him play in the midfield alongside Thomas Partey but I am not sure we will see that.
“I think it is the player wanting out of the club rather than the club wanting rid of the player. He is a tough little midfielder but I think he misses Italy.”
