Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Michael Brown has suggested Marcelo Bielsa may spring a surprise team selection as Kalvin Phillips prepares to return for Leeds United against Arsenal.

The former Leeds and Tottenham midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admitted it was “fantastic” to have the England international back after his recent layoff and that there could be shock twist when the line-ups are announced.

As confirmed by Bielsa at his pre-match press conference, the 24-year-old has recovered from his shoulder injury and is likely to return to the starting XI against the Gunners on Sunday.

Phillips missed the win over Aston Villa and the defeats to both Leicester City and Crystal Palace, while he was also forced to sit out England’s games during the international break.

Brown insisted it was “fantastic” to have the midfielder enforcer back in action and that his return could give Bielsa the licence to shake things up.

Brown told Football Insider: “Kalvin’s great, a great player, as we’ve discussed before, so fantastic to have him back in the middle but again, set-up, what will he go with, Marcelo?

“He always has some surprises in his personnel, in how he sets them up and I think this will also be a challenging one against an Arsenal shining who have showed great promise but still not getting to where they want to be.

“They’ve got more of a direction of football and where they want to be. I think it’s a real fascinating game now, need some reaction from Leeds, it’s about how they react.

“Once you lose a couple, it puts a bit of pressure on, they go to Everton and Chelsea next so it’s a big one.”
