Noel Whelan has tipped Leeds United to sign a central midfielder when the transfer window reopens in January.
The former Whites and Coventry striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insists it is “a must” that the club strengthen in the middle of the park.
Kalvin Phillips is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury and his presence was missed as Marcelo Bielsa’s side slipped to a 4-1 defeat against Leicester City on Monday night.
United are expected to be in the market for midfield cover in January after their summer pursuit of Michael Cuisance collapsed at the eleventh hour.
This site revealed earlier today that Reading midfielder Michael Olise is one of Leeds’ top targets and has an £8million release clause in his contract.
When asked by Football Insider if he expects his former club to sign a midfielder in January, Whelan said: “Leeds definitely need to sign another central midfielder.
“Whether we are doing well or not we still still need another creative centre-midfielder. It is a must.
“I think it is what Marcelo Bielsa wanted in the summer but we ran out of time. That will still be on the cards and I think there will be some strengthening in the January window.
“It needs to be done but at the same time the players already at Leeds have a responsibility to put in better performances than they did against Leicester.”
