Noel Whelan believes Leeds United would be making the right decision by letting “big earner” Barry Douglas join a Championship club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds forward and boyhood Whites fan believes the Scotsman is now Marcelo Bielsa’s fourth-choice left-back.
Football Insider revealed that Douglas is free to find another club in the domestic-only transfer window that closes on the 16th of October.
Championship side Watford have made an approach for the 31-year-old while Blackburn Rovers are also interested.
The Scottish international has not made a Premier League squad this season and he has just eight months left on his Elland Road contract.
Asked by Football Insider whether Leeds were making the right decision in letting Douglas leave, Whelan said: “We saw the best of Barry Douglas at the end of last season but we also saw an average Barry Douglas for two seasons.
“So all in all it’s not been a great move for Barry and it’s not been a good move for Leeds.
“He was very rarely involved, we never saw the real Barry Douglas that we bought from Wolves.
“He’s been on the bench, yes, but you see now that Allioski will be chosen before him and Leif Davis is coming through the ranks now whose coming up the pecking order because he came on against Manchester City.
“In my opinion, to get rid of a hefty wage that is sitting on the bench, not introduced to any games in the Premier League. I would say yes, Championship is all he’s going to get right now.”
Douglas joined the club two summers ago after helping Wolves to the Championship title in 2018.
After making 43 appearances in his first two appearances he he has been limited to just one Carabao Cup game this campaign.
In other Leeds United news, Whelan has shared a big update on the Whites’ pursuit of Todd Cantwell.
