Leeds United target Ross Barkley needs to leave Chelsea on loan this window if he is to have any chance of making England’s squad for next summer’s European Championships, according to Darren Bent.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the 12-capped England striker delivered his verdict as Barkley decided to stay and fight for his place at Stamford Bridge.
Both Leeds United and Aston Villa were interested in taking the 26-year-old on loan but he has told Chelsea chiefs he hopes to nail down a regular place in Frank Lampard’s side, as revealed by Football Insider.
Barkley has not started in any three of the Blues’ Premier League games this season and has been limited to just 40 minutes of league action.
He did start and score in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup victory over Barnsley last week but Bent believes he needs regular Premier League game time if he is to add to his 33 England caps.
Bent told Football Insider: “I like Ross Barkley.
“He’s not getting much game time at Chelsea and this is a guy who wants to try and get back into the England squad for next year’s European Championships, so he needs to play games.
“I think there will be a few of these guys who are looking for loan moves come the end of the window.
“The most important thing this year is not so much where you go, it’s about wherever you go you have to be playing.
“You can’t go to one of these clubs and sit on the bench all season because you want to make the squad. You need to go somewhere and play week in, week out.”
