Rangers manager Steven Gerrard

Noel Whelan claims Connor Goldson is “deserving” of a new Rangers contract after it was revealed that the club plan to offer the defender an improved deal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds United striker believes there is “much more to come” from the 27-year-old following his match-winning display at the weekend.

Goldson scored twice and helped keep a clean sheet as Steven Gerrard’s side beat Celtic 2-0 in the first Old Firm clash of the 2020/21 campaign.

Football Insider revealed earlier today that the Gers are set to offer the centre-half a new and improved deal this season.

The Englishman still has two years remaining on his current contract at Ibrox having penned a four-year deal upon his £3million arrival from Brighton in July 2018.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Goldson’s contract situation, Whelan said: “He is deserving of a new contract, absolutely.

“You can see that he is a very capable player. He is maturing into the player that Rangers were hoping he would be.

“Goldson seems to be a very level-headed player now that has a professionalism about him. He is showing that he can handle the pressure of the big games and that is what the club will be looking at.

“They have seen him develop and now they will look to give him a new contract because Gerrard trusts the player.

“To me, there is so much more to come from him. A great start to the season from him.”
