Pundit fears for 'struggling' Thiago after 'worrying' Liverpool update

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara could be “struggling” with the “physicality” of the Premier League, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, compared the 30-year-old’s problems with those of Gunners midfielder Thomas Partey – who missed 10 games last term.

As quoted by Sky Sports (9 January), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed Thiago will undergo”rehabilitation” for a hip injury from this week.

On Wednesday, injury expert Ben Dinnery told this site that the Spaniard could be in contention to face Cardiff City in the FA Cup on 5 February.

The former Bayern Munich midfielder has missed 35 Liverpool games since joining the Merseysiders in 2020 (as per Transfermarkt).

When asked if Thiago’s injury record is a concern, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: “This is a worry, but sometimes you just can’t legislate for these things.

“Some players can go around training and playing at other clubs virtually injury-free, but Thiago has come to England and his injury record just hasn’t got any better. He’s really struggling.

“We’ve seen it with Thomas Partey. He was on the pitch every week in La Liga, but since coming to England he’s had quite a few injury problems.

“It’s the physicality of the Premier League. It really is hard, and every game is a real crash to the body. Maybe that’s his issue.

“It’s a really tough one to take. Liverpool really need him in that midfield.”

Thiago has made 14 appearances for Liverpool this term, netting twice and registering one assist.

The 46-time Spain international is under contract at Anfield until June 2024.
