Pundit fears Premier League in crisis after Klopp’s ‘impossible’ Liverpool claim

Paul Robinson fears the integrity of the Premier League is in crisis after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp called the festive fixture list “impossible” given the current Covid situation.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one insisted the league is “not a level playing field” at the moment.

As reported by Sky Sports (20 December), the Premier League have decided against a circuit breaker and will continue with fixtures as scheduled.

Six of last weekend’s 10 Premier League game were postponed on Thursday due to outbreaks at clubs.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp said it’s “not possible” for his players to play on Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday as planned.

The Reds were without Virgil van Dijk, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho and Curtis Jones for the trip to Spurs because of Covid.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the latest, Robinson said: “You know at this time of year the fixtures come thick and fast.

“That is why Covid is proving to be such a big problem in football right now. Covid is putting a different spin on things.

“I do not want football to be cancelled. It is the last thing I want because it kept a lot of people sane during the last lockdown. But there is a lot of grey areas with this.

“In regards to Covid cases within squads, there has to be a point where it is no longer a level playing field. Chelsea have played three games with a depleted squad since Villa last had a match. They play Villa next. That is not a level playing field. It is very unfair.

“When the Premier League becomes an unlevel playing field then a decision needs to be made.

“In all honesty, I think it will be the government that make a decision and I don’t think they’re far away from it. I think it’s round the corner.”

In other news, a pundit is excited by a ‘huge’ Liverpool development behind the scenes last week.
