Pundit hails Staveley as ‘massive’ Newcastle hire on the cards after update

Frank McAvennie has hailed Newcastle United’s latest move in their hunt for a new director of football.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the club needs more experience at boardroom level.

On Tuesday (7 December), The Daily Mail reported Newcastle have hired an external recruitment firm to help in their search for a director of football.

It was also reported the club are set to appoint a short-term football recruitment advisor.

Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, who run Newcastle day-to-day, have no prior experience of running a football club.

McAvennie has hailed Newcastle’s decision to bring in help as they look to stay in the Premier League.

“I’ve said this before, you can’t run a club like Newcastle with no experience,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I think they have realised that now. They need to appoint a director of football and it needs to be the right guy.

“Newcastle are in such a precarious position and the right decisions need to be made in January.

“It’s a massive month for them. Bad recruitment will see them relegated. It’s that simple.

“They can still stay up if they bring in the right bodies and I think the club need a hand with that.

“That’s why this is such a great move. Eddie Howe can’t do it all on his own, though I’m sure he wouldn’t mind trying.”

Newcastle won their first game of the season on Saturday (4 December).

Callum Wilson’s goal earned a 1-0 win over Burnley.
