Pundit hits out over Erling Haaland latest - 'this just shows Man City can't rely on him'

Erling Haaland’s Man City teammates need to take the goalscoring burden away from him if he is to continue his fine form into the second half of the season.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 23-year-old’s form.

Against Brentford last weekend (12 November), Haaland failed to have a shot on target and registered the fewest touches of any City player who started the game (21), as per WhoScored.

That game was the first time the Norway international had started since recovering from ankle ligament damage at the end of October.

However, McManus insists criticism aimed at Halland should instead be levelled at his teammates.

“He had such a prolific start and everyone is expecting him to score every game now,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“I’m not sure it’s fair to criticise Haaland there because I don’t think anyone is capable of doing that. The good thing for him now is that he can go away and have a few weeks’ break during the World Cup.

“He can get his head down and revitalise. He will be disappointed he didn’t score against Brentford, he had a few chances.

“But this just shows, as good as Haaland is, City can’t rely on him all the time. You look at the other talent in that squad, where was Alvarez, De Bruyne?

“They need to chip in with goals if Haaland isn’t at it because Haaland isn’t going to score every game.

There is so much talent in that squad.

“To not have someone step up in that moment and break that Brentford defence is really poor for me, considering who they had on the pitch.”
