Pundit lambasts Todd Boehly after what he's heard at Chelsea - 'the last thing he needs'

Noel Whelan has claimed Todd Boehly must turn the ship around at Chelsea before launching controversial ideas such as a Premier League “All-Star” game.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 48-year-old has “bigger things to get right first” with the Blues “struggling” at present.

As per The Independent (14 September), Chelsea owner Boehly has revealed plans to launch a Premier League ‘All-Star’ Game – with the proceeds being used to help the wider football pyramid.

The idea has been mostly panned by pundits and top-flight managers alike.

On 8 September, The Athletic revealed details of several key differences of opinion behind-the-scenes at Stamford Bridge which led to the divisive sacking of Thomas Tuchel by Boehly.

The American, who took the reins at Chelsea in May, took charge of the Blues’ transfer dealings during the summer window.

The Blues sit seventh in the Premier League and have just one point from two games in the Champions League.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Boehly only just come into the football club.

“The last thing he needs to do is come out publicly and start trying to change things. He needs to concentrate on the job in hand – because it’s a very difficult one.

“There has been a lot of change at Chelsea – and the focus should be on getting everything straight there first.

“Have a couple of seasons to bed yourself in, and then you can try and change things. But he’s got to get his ship in order first.

“There’ll be plenty of time for interviews when the club is sitting second or third. Right now, they’re struggling.

“There are bigger things he has to get right first.”
