Tottenham have been hailed for “some great news” after opening talks with Troy Parrott over a new deal.
That is according to ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Londoners’ move to reward for their wonderkid forward.
The Premier League giants are working towards handing Parrott a big pay rise and an agreement that runs until 2022.
“Troy Parrott has huge potential so tying him down is really important,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He already has the physique of a man and he’s totally fearless as well.
“Mick McCarthy wouldn’t be playing him in the Republic of Ireland team if he didn’t think he could handle it. That tells you a lot.
“Spurs have struggled to reach agreements with some many of their senior players, so making progress with Parrott is finally some great news for the club and the fans.
“He’s a young striker who is going places. He scored bucketloads of goals at youth level and looks capable of making the step up.”
Parrott made his international bow for Ireland in last Thursday’s friendly win against New Zealand and was then an unused substitute in Monday’s Euro 2020 qualifying draw against Denmark.
He has played once for the Spurs first team, in an inexperienced XI against Colchester United in the League Cup in September.
