Pundit slams Aston Villa chiefs over 'completely baffling' update on manager hunt

Frank McAvennie has been left baffled by Aston Villa reportedly being interested in replacing Dean Smith with Paulo Fonseca.

The former Villains striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, can’t believe someone who has not managed in the Premier League could replace the under-fire Villa boss.

Football Insider revealed on 22 October the manager is under “huge” pressure to keep his job at his boyhood club and his future is looking even bleaker following Friday night’s defeat to Southampton.

On 1 November, the Daily Mail reported Aston Villa have sounded out former Roma manager Fonseca over replacing Smith.

McAvennie can’t believe Villa are considering hiring someone who has never managed in the top flight.

“So, let me get this straight, they are going to replace Smith with someone who has never managed in the Premier League?” McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“That’s baffling, completely baffling. I don’t get that at all. I have always said any pressure is undeserved.

“Look what he’s done for the club. They are an established Premier League team because of him.

“Now they want to replace him with someone who has never done it? Yeah, that will go well.

“Good luck lads. Honestly, this is getting daft now. I really feel for the guy.”

Villa spent heavily in the summer after they lost Jack Grealish to Manchester City.

They signed Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia, Danny Ings and Ashley Young in a bid to bolster their ranks.

In other news, the Premier League have been inundated with calls from clubs raging about an Aston Villa player.
