Pundit slams ’embarrassing’ Man United fans after Cristiano Ronaldo update

Frank McAvennie has claimed Man United fans blaming Cristiano Ronaldo for the “demise” of the club last season are “embarrassing”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker said players like Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford should have “thrived” alongside Ronaldo last season.

Spanish outlet Diario AS (18 July) reported that Atletico Madrid have been in contact with the 37-year-old’s representatives.

Ronaldo has already denied reports that he would be returning to Sporting Lisbon.

The striker has a year left on his contract at Old Trafford but is said to have asked Erik ten Hag for a move away from the English club.

If he remains at the Red Devils next season it will be the first time in his career that he won’t be playing Champions League football.

When asked for his assessment of the latest, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Ronaldo was moaning about players losing the ball and not trying to win it back last season.

People were blaming him for the demise of Man United, oh my god he scored 20 odd goals. It’s embarrassing.

They would rather have Martial or Rashford than Ronaldo. They should have thrived with someone like Ronaldo and [Edinson] Cavani beside them but they didn’t. If the manager plays the same team as last year, United won’t win anything.

The Portuguese international made 38 appearances for United across all competitions last season.

During that time he scored 24 goals and provided three assists.

In other news, sources have revealed Man United star Nathan Bishop has agreed in principle to join Wycombe Wanderers.
