Pundit slams 'ridiculous' Aston Villa decision makers amid 'awful' Smith latest

Frank McAvennie has implored Aston Villa to give Dean Smith more time as manager amid the latest on his future.

The former Villains striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was stunned by the reported response to Villa’s 4-1 loss against West Ham on Sunday.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday (3 November) that defeat to Southampton on Friday would prompt a review over Smith’s future during the international break.

This comes after an Aston Villa source told Football Insider (October 22) the manager is under “huge” pressure at his boyhood club.

Villa are 15th in the Premier League table, three points off the relegation zone.

Despite this, McAvennie insists Smith must be given more time after proving himself during his previous years at the club.

“After what Dean Smith has done, he deserves more time,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You can’t chop and change managers because you are in a run of bad form. All of this is just awful.

“Every team goes through a spell of bad form. They aren’t doing horrendously and if there is any man to turn it around, it’s him.

“They have had a horrible time with injuries as well. A new manager won’t change that.

“He deserves so much more than what Villa are currently giving him. The guys up in the boardroom are making a ridiculous decision.

“It doesn’t sit well with me. He’s a Villa boy and he will turn things around.”

Aston Villa travel to St Mary’s to face Southampton on Friday.

The Saints sit one place and one point above the Villains in the table.
