Pundit slams two Liverpool senior stars given mid-season 'holiday'

Frank McAvennie has slammed Liverpool after sending Alisson and Fabinho to Madrid while his side played a Premier League game.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims it wasn’t right for the goalkeeper to “be on holiday” after his time with Brazil.

Liverpool sent Alisson, 29, and Fabinho, 27, straight to Madrid for Tuesday’s Champions League game after they completed their international matches with Brazil.

Brazil played World Cup qualifiers in Colombia and Venezuela with both of those countries on the UK’s red list.

This meant Caoimhin Kelleher, 22, had to play against Watford but he impressed as the Reds strolled to a 5-0 win.

McAvennie insists Liverpools’ Alisson decision doesn’t sit right with him.

“Credit to the boy, he was wonderful,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Listen, if you are a goalkeeper at Liverpool then you are clearly very good.

“That being said, Adrian and Karius aren’t exactly wold beaters. But it will do the kid wonders in terms of his development.

“Klopp can also sleep a little bit easier at night knowing he actually has a decent backup goalkeeper.

“I’ll tell you what though, I’m not having Alisson not playing but going straight to Spain.

“Surely there was another way to do that? I get not wanting to risk him but he’s on holiday while his teammates are playing?

“That just didn’t sit right with me.”

Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 on Tuesday in a highly eventful match.

This leaves the Reds with three wins from three in this season’s Champions League.
