Pundit suggests Liverpool could sign Bruno Guimaraes after source’s £60m offer reveal

Noel Whelan has suggested Bruno Guimaraes would still be tempted by a potential move to Liverpool despite their lowly league position.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old is the standout player outside the Premier League’s traditional top four at present.

According to Brazillian outlet TNT Sports (26 October), Liverpool, Chelsea, and Real Madrid are pursuing Guimaraes amid uncertainty surrounding the midfielder’s contract situation.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (15 October) that Newcastle are preparing a record contract offer for Guimaraes that would run until 2028 and be worth £200,000-a-week – a total of £60million.

The Brazil international has notched seven goals and three assists in 27 appearances for the Magpies since joining in January.

Whelan claimed Jurgen Klopp’s side are “desperate” for a midfield signing.

When asked if Liverpool is still a significant step up from Newcastle, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely.

“Look at the players he’d be playing with at Liverpool.

“Newcastle would do everything in their power to keep him at the club because he’s become a real icon in the stands.

“We know Newcastle have got the money and the clout to give him a competitive contract. It’s just about whether he wants to repay that loyalty they showed to bring him in.

“This is what happens when you have a fantastic start to a new season, you’re going to catch the eye of the bigger clubs.

“We know Liverpool are desperate to freshen up that midfield area. He is the one who is really catching the eye from outside the top four teams right now.

“He can just get better and better as the years go by.”
