Pundit: This may be real reason Alderweireld is quitting Tottenham
Tottenham have sanctioned an exit for Toby Alderweireld to avoid a potentially poisonous influence in the dressing room.
That is the view of former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 32-year-old as he reportedly closes in on a move to Qatar.
As reported by The Telegraph‘s Mike McGrath (July 24th), Spurs have agreed to sell the Belgium international to Al-Duhail for £13million.
It comes after The Athletic reported on July 2nd that Alderweireld had told the club he wants to leave, two years before the expiration of his contract.
Whelan claimed Alderweireld’s exit is fuelled purely through money.
“He’s not over the hill yet but I think he has been at Tottenham too long now,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “Sometimes players need change.

“It certainly isn’t a change to go and win trophies and play at the highest level, this is purely about money. It seems to me like he wants a big pay day for the amount of years he may have left in his career.
“It is not about winning trophies. That is not his main aim here. If people are in that mindset and want to leave the club, you cannot hold onto them.
“You need the right energy at a club, especially for Nuno Espirito Santo who is trying to rebuild. He needs players that are going to give him everything.
“Players who are not 100 per cent committed to the project can be detrimental. Alderweireld is a brilliant defender but if it isn’t right, he can put doubt in the changing room.”
